How Players and Teams/Counties are Ranked
How are players ranked (Points OverQuota Process {POQ})?
This is done automatically by The GolfChamp Databank once you have entered 5 scores.
It uses a modified stableford rating process that is referred to as the "Quotas" System:
- You start each round with a number of quota points (or points to earn during your round).
The number of quota points that you start with is 36 less your "Handicap/GAR" plus the
difference between Course Par and the course rating for the set of tees played.
Your "GAR/Handicap" is calculated for you by the GolfChamp databank
and it becomes more accurate -- the more scores over 5 that you enter
- You earn points for each good hole you score during the round.
Points are: Bogey=1, Par=2, Birdie=4, Eagle=8, Double-eagle=16.
You lose 1 point for each Triple or worse
- A (POQ)Points overQuota value is calculated from the difference
between your starting quota and points you earned during the round
- The average of the best 4 of their last 9 (POQ) Points OverQuota Scores (in date sequence) are used for the ranking of all players against each other
- Example:
- Your GAR/Handicap = 16
- You played the blue tees - PAR = 72 and Course Rating = 71.0
- Your Starting quota = 36 - 16 + 1 = 21
- You made 5 bogies, 6 pars, 1 birdie, 2 triples in your round
- You earned (5 *1) + (6*2) + (1*4) - (2*1) = 19 points
- Your points over quota (POQ) for that round is -2.
- A positive Points OverQuota value indicates that you had a good round of golf
How are teams ranked?
Teams are ranked against each other based on the average Points OverQuota scores (as per the above process) of their top 6 ranked players.
GAR (Golf Ability Range) Rankings?
After a player has entered 5 or more scores, GolfChamp uses those scores to place each player in a Golf Ability Range (GAR). The Ranges are:
Low70s, High70s, Low80s, High80s, 90s and Over100. PGA Professionals are placed in their own separate category. These categories are also used to
determine a player's strengths and areas for improvement by comparing them against all others in their specific GAR.
Seniority Rankings?
Each GolfChamp member can specify a seniority range and the databank will show how he/she compares to others in that seniority range.
Seniority Ranges are: 4-12, 13-18, 19-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, Over 80. For seniority groups 4-12 and 13-18 (events for kids/Juniors), members can just
add their birthdates and the databank will calculate and rank their performances and improvements by age.
"What's in your Bag" Rankings?
Each GolfChamp member can specify what's in his/her bag (Driver, fairway woods, irons, wedges, putter, balls and shoes)
based on the current manufacturer of the equipment they are using. Members can therefore see how they are performing
compared to others with the same equipment based on their GAR and seniority.
